My core class is called Environmental Science of the Arctic, Glaciers and Human impact: Icelandic Climate Change Case Study. Its a mouthful, but we're basically studying how the earths climate changes using Iceland as our model. This week was entirely dedicated to this class. We spent three days traveling in Odsherred in northern Denmark and then 2 days of lectures and field studies. On Monday we drilled for sediment cores in a peat bog. It was so cool to see all the layers of sediments. The colors can be so different and through geochemistry, we can find out a lot about the climate. That evening we stayed in a 'folk high school' with danish students our age, which was so much fun.
Sediment core drilling in a peat bog. The oldest sediment we drilled is about 8,000 years old.
